PSMISI HISTORICAL DEVELOPMENT
Palm Springs Montessori and Learning Center, Inc. was founded in 2003 by a family headed by Engr. and Mrs. Eugene Manantan whose concern is to provide a second home for children conducive for both learning and growing. The site where the school stands was developed as an introduction to the townspeople of Villasis and its nearby towns that there will be a loving and God-fearing community of well-rounded individuals.
Palm Springs Montessori was incorporated as a non-stock, non-profit organization on April 21 , 2003. The purpose in establishing the school was two-fold; to offer an affordable quality accredited educational alternative and to address the shortage of private schools offering a quality education in this part of Pangasinan.
In June 2003, Villasinians witnessed history being unfolded. The school where young minds grow was inaugurated. The blessing of the building was solemnized by Rev. Fr. Calicdan was attended by the town’s highest officials and some relatives and close friends of the family. PSM started its operation with twenty three children- four of them were Grade 1 with three teachers namely: Ms. Monica Jacoba, Ms. Christina Bugarin and Ms. Jacquelyn Benitez. The children were housed in a two-classroom structure furnished with Montessori materials. School population grew tremendously after a year. Our enrolment for the academic year 2004 – 2005 apparently needed a bigger building. Two classrooms were constructed on the second floor to accommodate the 273.91% increase in our enrolment. Grades 2, 3 and 4 were opened that year.
The influx of enrollees was unprecedented and undeniably overwhelming. With God’s providence, our student population continues to rise. In 2005 – 2006, we had a 47.67% increase in our enrolment. Everyone was happy because in three years time we were able to reach an enrollment of more than a hundred thinking of the fact that it happened when private schools were sprouting like mushrooms.
In the school year 2006-2007, there was a considerable increase in our enrolment list. From 127 pupils it went up to 149. Although the increase was not as high as the previous years, still we considered it as a great achievement. Obtaining an increase of 17.32% when the economy is unstable is considered luck and a blessing. And in the midst of a shaking economy we constructed four more rooms to give ample space for each growing class. Economic slowdown was first felt in the education sector in the school year 2007 – 2008. It was during this year when parents opted to enroll their kids in public schools to ease the effect of the financial crisis. Luckily, the PSM population remained unscathed. It did not decline or increase. We had a steady number of pupils for two consecutive years.
Many countries in the world started to feel the hard blows of economic meltdown in 2006. This scenario gave us uncertainties. We had fears that education might be greatly hit by this financial crisis. And if that happens, Palm Springs Montessori like other schools will not be spared. But surprisingly, amid the economic crisis, we got a 24.83% increase giving us 186 pupils in the previous school year. It was something that we did not expect. It was inspiring because the increase was composed mostly of pupils who came from other private schools and whose parents are looking for quality education.
Student population rose steadily and parents had to clamor for the opening of high school. The administrators saw the wisdom of accommodating secondary students. Hence, the high school department was conceived.
On February 18, 2008, Engr. & Mrs. Eugene Manantan led the ground breaking to where the high school building was erected. Five classrooms were built before the gates of PSMISI were finally opened for the incoming freshmen students in June 2008. A year back, the Board of Trustees amended that the school be given a new name. Hence, Palm Springs Montessori and Learning Center, Inc. is now known as Palm Springs Montessori Integrated School, Inc.
The continuous increase in population inspired the administrators to keep on improving its facilities in order to provide an ideal place to learn and to receive a quality education. Since the school started its operation, physical as well as academic developments for the enhancement of learning were made.
It was in 2009 when the TLE and Industrial Arts rooms behind the office and canteen were constructed. It was later furnished with kitchen and other home furniture and utensils essential for homemaking as well as tools necessary for carpentry, industry and gardening. The academic innovations and physical renovations that we constantly implemented further support our academic and co-curricular programs which aim to develop our learners to be globally competitive and be adequately prepared for the world of work or entrepreneurship or higher education.
The application for government recognition for the high school curriculum was granted in 2010. This gave us a chance to apply for a certification from the Fund for Assistance to Private Education (FAPE) for the school to become a member of the Education Service Contracting Program of the government, an agency which gives subsidy to incoming first year students enrolled in private schools. The first set of recipients of this government assistance was granted to the Freshmen students in the school year 2011-2012.
In 2011, PSMISI received its full recognition from the Department of Education as an institution for Preschool, Grade school and High school students. In the same year, the second and third floors of the high school building were finished. Half of the third floor was used as Function Hall for only a year. The function hall was converted into classrooms to accommodate the growing number of high school students.
In the further development of the school, the high school building was extended in 2016 providing space for the relocation of TLE and Speech Laboratory. The said extension also provided two big sizes, one regular and one small size classroom for Junior and Senior High School. It gives a spacious area for the comfort room relocation of the building . The previously converted function hall was again utilized as it is.
Today, Palm Springs Montessori has eighteen conducive and fully air-conditioned classrooms, updated Library for research, highly advanced speech laboratory and computer room, well-equipped Science laboratory, fully-furnished EPP/TLE and Industrial Arts rooms, clean and orderly canteen, well – kept rest rooms, authentic Montessori Pre-school classroom and spacious playground with imported play apparatuses and wide parking area.
PSMISI continues to soar high in providing quality education. It will always be zealous in creating a center of excellence to all Villasinians and the nearby townsfolk.
May the Divine Providence constantly shower His abundant blessings to all members of the PSMISI family.
